Memory System is a lightweight Agent memory solution. Unlike traditional approaches that rely on vector databases, it uses a file-based Markdown storage architecture, enabling Agents to maintain context continuity across multiple conversations while keeping infrastructure minimal and simple.

Core Philosophy

Most Agent memory solutions require deploying vector databases and configuring embedding models, which adds system complexity and operational costs. Memory System's approach is to use human-readable Markdown journal files as the memory carrier, implementing practical long-term memory capabilities through structured file organization and intelligent retrieval.

Core Features

Markdown Journal Storage

Each significant Agent interaction is recorded as a structured Markdown file, containing timestamps, conversation summaries, key decisions, and action items. These files serve as the Agent's memory while remaining documents humans can directly read and edit.

Intelligent Context Recall

When a new conversation begins, Memory System automatically retrieves relevant historical memory fragments based on the current topic, injecting the most relevant context into the Agent's workspace. This allows the Agent to "remember" previous discussions and avoid redundant communication.

Hierarchical Memory Management

The system organizes memory into three levels: short-term memory (current session), working memory (recent active projects), and long-term memory (archived important decisions). Different levels have different retention policies and recall priorities.

Memory Merging and Compression

As time passes, memory files accumulate. Memory System provides automatic merging and compression capabilities, consolidating related memories into more concise summaries to prevent unlimited memory growth.

  1. Install Memory System skill into your OpenClaw Agent project.
  2. Specify a directory as the memory storage location (defaults to .memory/ folder in the project root).
  3. The Agent automatically creates and maintains memory files during operation.
  4. You can anytime open Markdown files to view, edit, or delete specific memory entries.

Technical Advantages

No additional database services required — memory files can be directly included in version control (Git) for easy team collaboration and historical tracking. For small to medium-scale Agent applications, this is a practical and efficient memory solution.
