Financial Statement Analysis

Skill Overview

Financial statements are the "health checkup report" of a business. This skill helps financial professionals quickly interpret core data from balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, calculate key financial metrics, identify operational risks, and generate professional analysis reports and operational recommendations.

Input Requirements

Please provide the following financial data:

  • Balance Sheet: At least the most recent reporting period, preferably with year-over-year comparison
  • Income Statement: Current and prior period comparison data
  • Cash Flow Statement: Cash flow data from operating, investing, and financing activities
  • Purpose of Analysis: Whether routine monthly analysis, annual summary, or investment due diligence
  • Industry Information: Industry information to enable comparison with industry averages
  • Focus Areas: Any particular focus such as profitability, solvency, or operational efficiency

Analysis Dimensions

This skill will conduct analysis from the following four major dimensions:

Profitability Analysis

  • Gross margin, net margin, ROE (return on equity), ROA (return on assets)
  • Revenue structure analysis and profit source breakdown
  • Year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter trend changes

Solvency Analysis

  • Asset-liability ratio, current ratio, quick ratio
  • Short-term debt pressure and long-term debt structure assessment
  • Interest coverage ratio

Operational Efficiency Analysis

  • Days sales outstanding, inventory days outstanding, days payable outstanding
  • Cash conversion cycle (CCC) analysis
  • Asset turnover efficiency assessment

Cash Flow Analysis

  • Relationship between operating cash flow and net profit
  • Free cash flow calculation and trend analysis
  • Capital expenditure reasonableness assessment

Output Content

  • Key Metrics Dashboard: Overview of key financial metrics with health status indicators
  • Trend Analysis: Changes and cause analysis of major metrics
  • Risk Warnings: Flagging of abnormal metrics and potential risk alerts
  • Industry Comparison: Gap analysis against industry averages (if industry data provided)
  • Operational Recommendations: Recommendations for improvement and focus areas based on financial data

Usage Tips

  • Analyze with three interconnected statements: Don't view any single statement in isolation; relationships between the three statements often reveal more information
  • Focus on trends rather than absolute values: Single-period data has limited meaning; consecutive multi-period trend changes have more analytical value
  • Understand numbers with business context: The same metric has different meanings in different industries and development stages
  • Distinguish one-time from recurring: Identify non-operating gains/losses to reveal true operating performance

Precautions

  • Analysis results are based on provided financial data; data quality directly impacts accuracy
  • Financial metrics require comprehensive judgment considering industry characteristics and actual company circumstances
  • For major operational decisions, recommend comprehensive evaluation combining audit reports and business research
